Already previewed in our April Round-up, a Kickstarter campaign for Scape-IT’s retro-style dark fantasy game SKALD: Against the Black Priory has now been launched. Inspired by legendary titles such as Ultima and the Gold Box series, and with the narrative ambition of a modern RPG, SKALD will see players develop and lead a party of up to six characters as they explore the accursed Black Priory. The game is both challenging and immersive, featuring glorious 8-bit graphics, tactical combat, dynamic tree-based dialog and branching narrative sequences.
The Gallian Empire is in turmoil: By virtue of its Wizard Lords, the Empire stood for a thousand years. Now the fabric of the realm is fraying. Within, the ruling elite is losing its jealously guarded monopoly on the use of magics. Without, hordes of enemies threaten the realms of man.
In these troubled times heroes are few and far between.
SKALD: Against the Black Priory is a classic, tile- and turn-based RPG, set in a dark and gritty fantasy universe full of tragic heroes, violent deaths and eldritch horror. The game features vintage graphics, complex level-based character development and grindless tactical combat, and as a party-based RPG, SKALD puts heavy emphasis on both roleplaying and mechanical interaction between party members.
Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will receive a DRM-free version of SKALD for PC (Windows), shipped digitally and/or on a custom USB card. The game will subsequently be released for Mac and handheld devices. Rewards also available include a full-colour Game Map, a soft-cover Manual and Campaign Guide, T-Shirts, access to exclusive in-game content, and an ultimate Collector’s Edition.

UPDATE: SKALD will now be available for Mac during the Kickstarter. Backers will be able to choose either a Windows or Mac version in a backer survey after the campaign has ended.
