Tales of the Black Death from the Czech independent game developer Doubleton Game Studio is a 14th century interactive survival adventure. Tales of the Black Death – Italy is the first installment in an expansive three-part series, to be followed by Part 2 – France, and Part 3 – England.
In Tales of the Black Death – Italy the player follows Baldasar, a young Italian boy, as he journeys through Italy in the Middle Ages. Haunted by the death of his parents from an unknown illness, Baldasar becomes an outcast and finds solace in the companionship of a travelling thief. Together, they try to survive the unforgiving land populated with diseases, bandits and death.
As the young and naïve Baldasar witnesses people dying around him, and as the stakes increase higher, he slowly becomes more resilient, adapting his actions and responses to the new world that surrounds him. Baldasar’s journey into adulthood will continue in Part 2, as he leaves the innocent boy behind while exploring different aspects of his – and the player’s – morality in the ever-changing plague infested landscape.
Tales of the Black Death is a game of morality. In addition to managing your health, injuries, malaise and infections, the game establishes it’s own morality landscape, in which the player must make difficult choices. Each Moral Choice impacts the storyline, and influences how other characters view you.
The game is designed to offer maximum replayability, as multiple approaches to play can lead to many different outcomes. Be mindful of how you choose to play; if you indulge in immoral and offensive behaviour, you will lose all of your morality, and lose your soul.
Tales of the Black Death – Italy is available for Android and iOS, with a new update arriving very soon that will feature two new locations, two new characters, and some interesting historical information.
