Branching Narrative’s Deathtrap Dungeon is an interactive video realisation of Ian Livingstone’s multi-million selling Fighting Fantasy gamebook – one of the most popular titles in the celebrated series. Starring British actor Eddie Marsan as the narrator and guide, this video storybook showcases Branching Narrative’s new Interactive Fiction engine, and features nearly 5 hours of video, challenging the player to survive Baron Sukumvit’s devious Trial of Champions on a quest to escape the dungeon’s many fiendish traps and deadly creatures.
Part story, part game, this is Interactive Fiction where YOU become the hero!
Deathtrap Dungeon is delivered as a high quality video stream with Eddie Marsan prompting the player to make choices and direct the flow, offering enhanced gameplay over other recent high-profile ‘interactive movie’ offerings, fully utilising the mechanics from the classic Fighting Fantasy gamebook.
Branching Narrative are keen to ensure that Deathtrap Dungeon stays true to the spirit of the original book, however, they will introduce optional new features to make the game as enjoyable, and as accessible to, as wide an audience as possible. These new features will include an all-new simplified battle mechanic, and the ability to revisit anywhere on your previous route when you die.
The current Early Access build of the game is playable to completion but is still in active development, with the full version set to include completed versions of the new features, Steam achievements, and fully edited video content featuring special effects, original book artwork, and sound.
Deathtrap Dungeon is expected to be in Early Access for 1-2 months, and the developer is actively seeking requests and feedback from players ahead of a full release. Regular updates will be posted in Steam’s Community Hub, actively encouraging opinions on the design of extra features, and generally involving player interaction as much as possible. The game will be available at a discounted price during the Early Access period, in appreciation of player feedback.
Deathtrap Dungeon is now available for PC and Mac via Steam. Mobile and other formats will follow later in the year.
