Mines of Immortia is an interactive game for mobile devices that leans heavily on the rules created for the tabletop role-playing game, Dungeon World. Written, designed and developed by Steve Radabaugh of Radical Bomb Games, Mines of Immortia is Powered by the Apocalypse, which means that it plays very similar to an old CYOA gamebook.
The entrance to the mine seems especially dark and foreboding at night. The mine goes straight into the side of a mountain. The entrance is boarded over, but some of the boards are rotted, and others have been removed, leaving enough space for just about anyone to squeeze through. It seems fairly dark inside.
The first chamber in the mine is clearly a staging ground for deeper exploration. The remains of a wooden table that was long ago smashed by something are on one side of the chamber. You can make out a variety of tracks going deeper into the mine…
Mines of Immortia was written in Unity, and the story written in Twine. A customised version of Twison was then used to get the story from Twine into Unity.
Sometimes dice roll to make things happen, with all rolls having 3 possible outcomes: a 10 or better results in a good outcome; a 7-9 receives an outcome where things go the way you want, but usually with a complication; a 6 or worse is a bad result. PBtA games always push the story forward even on a bad result, which works really well for interactive fiction games.
The game has many different paths to reach its conclusion with two different ending scenarios to achieve depending on how you do in getting there. Also, several of the rooms you’ll encounter are randomly chosen to offer additional replayability. Play the game to find out what happens as you delve into the depths of the Mines of Immortia.
Mines of Immortia is available from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.
