Jonathan Green has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the latest gamebook in his ACE Gamebooks series. Beowulf Beastslayer is a brand new take on the Anglo-Saxon epic, re-imagining the events described in the poem as an interactive gamebook. Will you follow the course of events as laid down by the scops and skalds of old, or will you choose a different path and forge your own legend?
In Beowulf Beastslayer, you take on the role of the eponymous hero Beowulf himself in the greatest fantasy story of them all. Beowulf is an Old English story authored by an anonymous poet, in which Beowulf, a hero of the Geats (a tribe from southern Sweden), comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the King of the Danes, whose magnificent feasting hall has been under attack by a monstrous man-wolf shadow creature known as Grendel.
King Hrothgar’s great golden mead-hall Heorot is under a curse, subject to attacks by the mirth-hating night-stalker Grendel. None are capable of destroying the monster, although many have tried, until Beowulf and his company of Geatish warriors cross the sail-road and land on Danish shores…
The legendary artist Russ Nicholson – a fan favourite who has previously illustrated numerous gamebooks and roleplaying games (including Fabled Lands and many of the Fighting Fantasy series) – will illustrate Beowulf Beastslayer with images in his richly detailed and always stylish technique. Additionally, achieving specific Stretch Goals during the campaign will also increase the amount of illustrations to be featured in the book.
Beowulf Beastslayer will be available in three different formats: eBook (which will include hyperlinks), paperback, and a special limited edition collector’s hardback (including artist’s sketches and designer’s notes), and will again be published by Snowbooks (Alice’s Nightmare in Wonderland, The Wicked Wizard of Oz, NEVERLAND – Here Be Monsters! and YOU ARE THE HERO, Parts 1 & 2).
Exclusive Beowulf Beastslayer miniatures are available at certain pledge levels, and you can also purchase themed Add-ons in addition to a copy of the gamebook. The Kickstarter campaign ends on October 31st.
